If Your Garage Door is Stuck

wooden carriage house garage doors PAIt can be a very frustrating thing—you come home and press the button, but your garage door doesn’t open. You press again and still nothing. You press more fervently out of frustration, but you get nowhere. The problem is more than not being able to get into the garage. Your car may be at risk of theft, left out in the elements, and there may be things you cannot get from inside. So, if your garage door is stuck, what do you do?

Check the basics, like the remote.

Check to make sure you did not disengage or lock anything. Also, make sure your clicker has batteries and is working properly. Even if your remote seems to have the power it should, perhaps it is malfunctioning.

Try opening the door manually.

If those fail, sometimes the door just needs a little loosening. You may still be able to open the door by hand and then determine the problem up close. However, if you do manage to open the door that way, it may not be a good idea to park in the garage until you are sure the door is working; you don’t want to be stuck inside the garage, either.

Take a look at all parts.

Is there a chain problem? Are the mechanisms responding at all? Is there something jammed somewhere preventing the door from opening? Consider the weather, too; ice can create a problem. There are a wide variety of things that could cause a garage door to fail. The only way to know for sure is to assess the possibilities yourself. Of course, there is always the possibility that you may need some professional help.
