Your garage door is important; you use it every day, sometimes multiple times per day. Installing and repairing these doors are often not cheap for many, and so it’s essential to keep an eye on them and maintain them. Before you call a professional, try a few tips to care for and preserve your garage doors.
Listen

usly, sound is one of the first things you may notice when your garage door has a problem. It may be too loud, it may squeak, etc. Check the mechanisms regularly, and make sure the mechanical parts—not the electric, of course—are well-oiled. You can use a normal spray lubricant, or anything recommended by professionals; always check before doing so. If you are able, check for loose parts and tighten them. If you are worried that it may be the electrical components, you will have to contact a professional.
Balance and Operation
Your doors should open and close easily. Rollers allow the door to move, and a properly balanced door stays up, even halfway up, as you need. You can test these components by regularly observing movement closely; never let your garage door continue to run with worn or damaged parts, even if it seems to function well enough. Routinely replace parts as instructed by the manufacturer. Test the balance of the door by disconnecting the door from the automatic opener, and then rolling the door manually. If it doesn’t stay put where it should, you will need to have it balanced. Test the door’s reverse sensors; if they don’t react to something in the way of closing by reversing, there is a problem.
Clean and Preserve
The mechanics are not the only important issues; your doors should be check for dings, chips, rust, weatherstripping damage, etc. Chipped paint and dings can rust in some metal doors, and wood doors can suffer water damage. Paint, sand, clean, and do all other things to maintain your doors.
