There are plenty of reasons you might need an electric garage door opener installed. You may move into a new home and the doors do not come equipped with an opener. Or, your current one may get old and malfunction. Whatever the reason, you could find yourself in need of a new installation. If that’s so, here is what you should expect.

Understand Your Door Mechanisms

There are a few types of garage door openers. Each achieves the same thing—opening your garage doors—but in different ways. The most common system is the chain drive. A chain attached to a trolley opens the door by pulling it on a rail via a motor. Belt drives do the same, but with a belt, and more quietly than the chain. There are others types and it’s important to understand your choices so that you can make the right decision based on your needs. Perhaps you are most concerned with expense, or maybe you need something quiet.

Garage door openers are not what lift the weight of the door. The motors don’t have much horsepower to get things moving, so the door’s springs do most of the heavy lifting. During installation, the springs must be adjusted to carry that weight, otherwise things simply won’t work properly.

Don’t Perform Your Own Installation

Unless you’re already a professional, installing a new garage door opener is a complex job, even for someone with experience in mechanics. It is best left to someone with experience. If you need help with your garage doors and openers, call Abstract Overhead Door and Fence.
