Dealing with a Badly Damaged Garage Door
A severely damaged garage door usually happens suddenly. Perhaps your teenager forgot to make sure the door was open before backing out. Or, perhaps you were in a hurry and forgot. Maybe the door suddenly malfunctioned and, rather than descend slowly, it dropped and cracked. There are plenty of ways to end up with a badly damaged garage door, as well as plenty of ways to deal with them.
Of course, we all try and start with caution. Caution and proper garage door use are the best preventatives. When that isn’t enough, though, start by assessing the damage. As you survey the door, ask yourself some questions:
- What type of damage is it? (Cracks, chips, distortions, etc.)
- Does the door still move, or has the mechanism been affected?
- Are any parts off of the structure? (Hinges, rollers, etc.)
The answers will give you a good idea of what kind of repair you may be facing. More importantly, it will help a professional understanding what’s to be done. Because, ultimately, you do not want to try and fix a garage door that has been so badly damaged on your own. This calls for a professional.
In many cases, you may be looking at a completely new door, or even system. If this unfortunate circumstance arises, it may be time to consider a whole new type of garage door system.
